Stevie - Endangered species series - recycled/organic Eco-Fleeceâ„¢ blend Zip Hoodie
Stevie the Steelhead. There is a hot debate on whether or not this species of fish is in fact, trout or salmon.
So, to clarify: Stevie is what’s called the sea-run form of the coastal Rainbow trout.
This means they’re born in freshwater rivers, like trout, and stay there up to three years. Then they venture to sea, where they grow to a large size, before returning to river systems to spawn, like salmon. They can live for a long time, up to eight years, and can spawn three times in a lifetime!
In Canada, they are found in larger British Columbia watersheds, from south coastal areas all the way to northwestern B.C.
The more time they spend in the ocean, the more Steelheads resemble traditional Pacific salmon colouring: dark blue backs with spots and silvery sides. The more time spent in freshwater, the more they begin to resemble Rainbow trout: silvery and bright with tints of orange and pink in the scales. How cool is that?!
Stevie is just a young Steelhead with their whole life ahead of them. Human-caused hazards, such as declining habitat quality and climate change, are threatening the future of Stevie and other Steelheads. In the Thompson River system, their numbers are the lowest in 43 years, and for the Chilcotin in 49 years.
Our MLAs are fighting for legislation to protect these endangered species.
