Alex - Protect endangered species - Kids t-shirt
Alex the Northern Fur Seal frolics in the Pacific Ocean (from Japan, through the Bering Sea, down to California). They eat herring, anchovy, squid, salmon, and more. They are part of the “pinniped” (seal/sea lion/walrus) family, and are more closely related to sea lions than harbour or stellar seals —they have external ear flaps and large flippers to support sitting upright when on land, as shown here in their “model shot."
When initially “discovered” in the 18th century, they were hunted to near extinction for their fur. Protected since the early 1900s, their population has decreased dramatically since the 1970s, although scientists are still trying to determine the exact cause.
Our MLAs are fighting for legislation to protect endangered species like Alex.
